Getting Back in the Marketing Saddle 1

About

I was having a conversation with Liz Harr from Hinge, a professional services marketing firm, yesterday. I had watched their Webinar on Visible Experts last week and took them up on an offer for a free consultation.

Their Webinar and research had piqued my interest, and marketing is hard, especially one's own, so why not get their opinion?

Liz had reviewed my website and my online marketing efforts in advance of our call. Partway through our conversation, looking at my Speaking page, she observed, "Looks like you've been gone for while."

Wow. Sure enough, it does.

The truth of the matter, as I thought more about the meaning of that one simple statement, is that Liz is right more than she knows - and it shows.

In November of 2013, I was on the main stage of WOMMA Summit speaking during the closing session of the annual meeting. I had been an author of the WOMMA Influencer Guidebook published earlier that year, and I was leading the charge along with a few WOMMA board members to organize groundbreaking research on the effectiveness of word of mouth marketing. I was engaged. I was contributing to my field. I was visible.

And then life struck. I was diagnosed with breast cancer on December 3, less than two weeks after I was on that stage holding the mike.

WHAM.

Just like that.

36. Healthy. Running a successful consulting business. Climbing mountains and skiing down them. And there I was facing this overwhelming, terrifying, and tough mental and physical battle.

It took me out of the game.

I took myself out of the game.

I contacted my friends at WOMMA the next day and said I would have to step back for a while. I needed to focus on my health and my clients.

But I didn't just step back - I stepped out.

It took Liz's simple observation for me to realize. I've been gone for a while, in more ways than one.

Good marketing isn't easy. It takes time, hard work, and stamina, amongst other things and on top of everything else we have to do - even for marketing professionals. It's easy to get out of practice, put it on the back burner, or add it to the ever growing to do list. But it's vital to each of us, not to mention just plain FUN.

So, time to get back in the marketing saddle. Time to re-engage, start contributing again, and be visible.

I would like to extend a huge thanks to Liz and Hinge for their inspiration. I hope my story provides inspiration for someone else out their who may have gotten out of their marketing groove or is struggling to find the time and energy for marketing. If you need some inspiration and motivation and a conversation might help, contact me.
